We’re on a mission and we want to do things differently! Building a sharing community of global travellers who genuinely want to see the world whilst contributing and giving back to the places they visit. Alongside our welcoming hosts, ready to receive visitors who are able to help out. With thousands and thousands of users and millions of page views every month we thought it was time to write another update on Workaway where we’ve come from and where we’re going… First of all, a continued big thank you to everyone who has made the success of Workaway possible. As well as our current team, we also want to thank the thousands of members who have used Workaway to connect and spread the message on a global scale. Did you know that we’ve grown completely organically and NEVER actively advertise? Workaway has grown via word of mouth, which only inspires us to keep going, knowing that we are providing a service that is making waves across the global travel community. It always used to amaze us that people would pay thousands of dollars to companies or agents to volunteer or work in a different country. Often these companies would charge to “arrange” a volunteer stay or job whilst taking a huge chunk of the profit for themselves and to pay for their advertising whilst giving a very small percentage to the actual place in need. We feel we have made great strides in disrupting this industry. We know that given the right tools and with the power of the internet people are perfectly capable of arranging their own stay, conducting their own checks and organising their own insurance and transport, not only giving the flexibility they need but also making substantial savings to their travel budget. We believe that you get out of life what you are willing to put into it!

Wakü Lodge is an inn that is located on the shore of the Canaima Lagoon, overlooking the Ucaima, Golondrina, Wadaima and Hacha Falls. In addition to its prime location, Wakü blends with landscapes and jungles to offer a warm and comforting environment that feels perfect and non-intrusive. Filled with uncaged birds, Wakü has become a sanctuary for the parrots and toucans that decided to live there. They appreciate the gestures of the guests, including caresses and snacks. Wakü is a family business that offers multiple spaces to share, read and relax. There are outdoor hammocks and many seating areas available to enjoy the breeze and views of the lagoon. The Wakü team accompanies its guests from their arrival at the airport, picks them up and takes them to the Lodge to share a welcome cocktail and show them around. Likewise, the inn offers packages that will allow its guests to enjoy intimate contact with the Canaima National Park, always accompanied by expert guides in the different expeditions and adventures, such as the trip to Angel Falls in a long canoe, through the Canaima Lagoon and other eye-catching attractions of the National Park. As part of the basic package, during their stay, people can feel free to use the paddle boards or kayaks in the Laguna, or take a ride through the indigenous town on the Cannondale bikes that they have at their guests' disposal. Other activities that can be done at this inn include different modalities to get to know the Angel Falls, visit the Kavac caves, trek to the Kuravaina Tepuy with Pozo Azul, among other activities that involve being in contact with nature. The history of this inn started with Raúl García Cañizal, a Spanish immigrant from Salamanca who arrived in Venezuela in 1957 and moved to Canaima in 1978. He started out supporting other operators as a tour guide, and it didn’t take long for him to decide that Canaima would be his life. As soon as his savings allowed him, Raúl acquired Canaima Tours C.A. with its concession on the shores of the Canaima Lagoon. This company, which started with a curiara and a cooler, turned it into the most important logistic system in the area, assembling a fleet of more than 40 boats (curiaras) and working with groups of more than 300 people who at that time were coming to Canaima from all over the world. This is how Raúl, with the unconditional support of his children, Castor, Rosa and Mary, and a team of great people, left a solid company, a relationship with the Pemón – which opened their doors to the family–, a great love for nature and a home for generations to come. In 1989 Mary met Julián Rodríguez, Captain of DC-3, in Canaima. Julián, apart from flying planes, was very good at construction. Together, as a family, they built the Wakü Lodge, which opened in 2002. Julián also ventured into his own aviation company. Almost 25 years after they arrived in Canaima, the now extended family is able to offer a complete experience: air transfer, accommodation and excursions. They are proud of their beginnings, nostalgic for the passage of time and the farewell of those who started this project, but they keep their vision forward, always dedicated to the dream of the Park. Today, their main objectives are to protect the National Park, to guarantee the sustainability of their facilities, to improve the working conditions of their team, and to offer to their guests the best experience in Canaima.

I grew up in a small farm community in the Eastern Cape. The world I knew then was only what was surrounding me; the farm, farm lands, livestock, bushes and forest and two or three other farm dweller families. That was my reality, no big cities or big townships. I never knew anything about big rivers, oceans, lots of animals, no idea of big mountains etc. When I grew up my parents moved to the city, things changed, it was a total new world. My world got so complex and vast. It was when I started visiting beaches, zoo, animal sanctuaries, visit nature reserves and botanical gardens and travelling by boats, ships and fly in aeroplanes. I am now an avid traveller, I also go for walks in the natural environments, listen to birds singing and so on. The world has so much to offer for those who grab these opportunities. As a family man, I often visit with my family to city parks, nature reserves, and lots of community projects that take care of animals and the environment. I am both an environmental and social activist, and I have spent most of my life either being involved directly in the protection of fauna and flora or training those who are involved in the same. When I travel or visit other countries, I visit mostly destinations that would offer natural and aesthetic beauty to tourists. I also have a huge interest in climate change as it is, among others, influenced by human behaviour, more especially air pollution. I am also interested in religion, more especially African Traditional religion. The reason for my interest in this branch of religion is because it is mostly nature based. In other words, it is religion that does not separate between humans and nature. For the adherents of this religion life is one and God manifests himself through nature and therefore taking care of nature is a religious duty. As an environmental and social activist, I am involved either through making financial contribution or contributing my time in community projects of different kinds. These projects would include contributing shoes to primary school learners who have no shoes, contributing money to soup kitchens for crèches and unemployed jobseekers and many other projects. I am hoping to sustain these initiatives to a level where they can help more people.

Villa Giustiniani was built in the 1950s by Dr. Piero Giustiniani and his wife Maria Antonietta Ponti, fell in love with the enchanting and enviable position, on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, overlooking the whole of Lake Garda, Italy. This splendid lake front villa, in the north end of the Sirmione peninsula, a unique and reserved position beyond the Scaliger walls, is near the Romanesque church of San Pietro in Mavino and the Terme di Acquaria, right next to the prestigious archaeological site of the "Grotte di Catullo". At the time, the land on which the villa was built was nothing more than a terracing of olive trees sloping gently towards the lake. On this land, thanks to the project of the architect Muzio, one of the most beautiful and exclusive villas of Lake Garda was built. Recently, during 2020, the Giustiniani family decided to put their hand to the Villa, for the first time since its construction, with an important renovation led by the young and dynamic architects of Areaform, who, without upsetting it and without taking away the charm that time had left them, they have been able to renew it and adapt it to modern tastes and needs. The main house is on two levels: on the ground floor the elegant entrance leads to the living room with large windows overlooking the green of the park with a panoramic view of the lake, a dining room, a study, a kitchen and a bathroom. On the first floor the sleeping area is divided into 4 equipped bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a long terrace with a breathtaking view. The property also includes an outbuilding consisting of a living room with kitchenette, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a greenhouse, a porch and a garage for two cars. Each room has a wonderful lake view, balcony, bathroom with direct private access, air conditioning and TV. The history of The Giustiniani family is one of nobility, descended from the Byzantine emperor Justin II, grandson of Justinian I. The noble family ran the risk of extinction during the 12th century: under the Doge Vitale Michiel II, in 1172, all the Giustiniani embarked with the Venetian fleet in the expedition against the emperor Emanuele Comneno. In fact, he had arrested the Venetians who were in his empire, about ten thousand at that time, confiscating all their assets and having hundreds of them killed. Doge Vitale Michiel II, on the wave of general indignation, organized an expedition led by himself. He attacked several Greek ports, and, just when he was aiming for Constantinople, on the island of Chios the Greeks poisoned the water cisterns of the Venetians (other historians report that it was due to an epidemic of plague) thus causing the death of the Justinian and forcing the decimated fleet to return to Venice. The only survivor of the family remained a certain Nicolò - a Benedictine monk in the Convent of San Nicolò del Lido - who, following pressure from the Doge Vitale Michiel to Pope Alexander III, obtained the dispensation from religious vows, thus allowing him to marry the daughter of the Doge - Anna - who gave him numerous offspring (nine males and three females) giving new and renewed lymph to the Giustinian lineage and brought him three districts of Venice as a dowry (San Moisè, San Giovanni in Bragora and San Pantalon). Done his duty, Nicolò Giustinian returned to the convent, and Anna Michiel became a Benedictine nun.

Splendid 18th century villa immersed in a wonderful park on the outskirts of Brescia. The ideal setting for an elegant hotel, a high-profile conference center, exclusive seminars and conferences but also for romantic weddings, ceremonies and gala dinners. It was in 1481 that the Avogadro family, of Venetian origin, decided to build a manor house on their large farm property in the village of Rezzato, where they had previously settled. In 1622, Earl Scipio Avogadro commissioned a new noble mansion, known as “Palazzo Vecchio” (Old Palace), which was to become the core of the estate. In 1735, during the Palladian period, the construction of the façade and of the East wing of the villa was started. The Avogadros assigned the work to a master builder from Bergamo, Giovanni Battista Marchetti, but it was Giovanni Battista’s son, Abbot Antonio Marchetti, who gave Villa Fenaroli the imposing appearance it has preserved to these days.

Villa Bongiovanni was constructed between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century by the Bongiovanni family, wealthy landowners of Verona, Italy. The villa was built in a neoclassical style and stayed in the family for several generations. In the 1940s, the building was purchased by a family from Locara who renovated it and changed the main façade, making it more "modern". Later, the villa was almost completely abandoned due to poor maintenance and the risk of collapse. Then, in 1996, Fernando Tadiello purchased the old mansion and decided to restore it to its original splendour. The portico was rebuilt with exposed stone walls and wooden ceilings. This space can accommodate a variety of events, with a capacity of 250 seats, and can be used both winter and summer thanks to the windows that enclose it, leaving a view of the garden. For smaller meetings, there are other rooms of different sizes (seating up to about 60 people). Then, the work to restore the main building of the villa was completed in December 2006. Villa Bongiovanni is a place where you can experience a moment of truly magical and unforgettable emotions. There, surrounded by the greenery of a magnificent park and the sublime architecture of an eighteenth century villa every occasion and stay in the elegantly decorated rooms, will be transformed into a pleasant and memorable event. Claudio and Samuela, the current managers also operate the Bed & Breakfast service offered by Villa Bongiovanni with special hospitality and provides to all guests a complete trust and autonomy during their stay. The renovation of the main building created five rooms and one Double Superior Room to accommodate tourists curious about the history, art, nature and gastronomic traditions of the area, but also professionals in search of a quiet place to get away from it all and recover energy for their working days, and couples seeking privacy or families on vacation. Every room is air-conditioned and has a bathroom with hydro-massage shower, toilet, bathroom amenities and a hairdryer. Plus, there is a satellite TV with an LCD screen. Free Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The Transatlantico is located at the foot of Castel dell’Ovo, within the magnificent seaside village of Santa Lucia, a tiny coastal town attached to the metropolis, a world apart to be discovered even for the Neapolitans themselves. The Transatlantico restaurant, also ideal for business dinners, offers an exclusive menu, with high-quality seafood cuisine. Large windows that allow you to experience the proximity of the sea, the bright, peaceful environment, the restful atmosphere, all make the dining room a very attractive setting for tasting the best traditional Campania foods. Attached to the restaurant, is the splendid terrace, overlooking the sea, which, from mild spring, through the summer, to the last sunny days of autumn, offers the experience of a breakfast, lunch or dinner, next to boats moored in the unique atmosphere of the Gulf of Naples, Italy. The rooms are designed with a great deal of attention paid to capturing in detail, seafaring motives and portholes, funnels, and other details to allude to life on-board, dominant colours being blue, wooden finishes and bright colours to enhance the marine theme. Large, airy windows seem to bring one closer to the sea, and allows a sensation of being on the pier, between floating boats and fishermen. I’m Toni-Leigh, born and bred in the Mother City of Cape Town. My fiancé and I, are parents to a lively 2-year old girl who arrived 5 years after losing our 3-year old son to a rare genetic disease. I love learning new things. Growing up, I was a voracious reader, reading anything and everything (even the classifieds and property ads) and with the advancement of technology over the years, I can have information at the tip of my fingers, so I’m always eager to learn new things and I’m a fast learner. I’ve always had an interest in Information Technology and was the go-to person in my office before my colleagues would go to the IT office, and now I’m looking into further studies so that I can develop my knowledge and skills. In 2005 I graduated from Varsity College with a Diploma in Travel and Tourism with aspirations of travelling worldwide in my profession. Things didn’t quite work out that way, having worked in retail and a company assisting young people to live and work in the UK. In the last decade or so, I’ve been in the tourism industry behind the scenes, working for an online holiday accommodation booking agency and more recently a company that does tours and safaris in Southern Africa. I also do freelance work remotely, such as, captioning for a speech-to-text service and social media evaluation. I am an introvert but enjoy working with and being in the company of others, while also enjoying being on my own. In the past I used to view being an introvert as a weakness because those higher up in the ranks of the companies I worked for were extroverted but in recent times I realised how much of a strength it is being an introvert as I also have a strong sense of empathy, which I believe is key in Customer Service and building interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients. I’m passionate about customer service and going the extra mile and l love that feeling of knowing that I’ve made a difference in someone’s day whether big or small. People tend to describe me as hardworking, punctual, efficient, dependable and trustworthy. Covid-19 affected the tourism industry drastically, however, I still want to travel anywhere I can, just soaking up the different cultures and experiences. The last year has been both challenging and rewarding and it has made me see things in a different light and so it has been somewhat of a new beginning for me. I am motivated now more than ever to seek out new passions and adventures and to get out of my comfort zone.
